About Houston Baptist University

Houston Baptist University, or HBU for short, is a is a private, tier one Baptist institution, located in both Greater Sharpstown and Chinatown, in Houston, which is the seat of Harris County, situated in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 2 million inhabitants, fact which makes it the largest city in the state and the 4th largest city in USA.

 

HBU was founded in 1960, being created by action of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, in the purpose to create a Christian college of the highest order in the city of Houston, which was opened 3 years later, with a freshman class of 193 students. Today, Houston Baptist University is recognized as one of the best universities in the country, the institution offering its students more than 50 undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs that range from Biblical Languages to Nursing.

 

Athletics

HBU's athletic teams are known as the Houston Baptist Huskies, who competed in NCAA Division I, in 15 sports, for men and women, including in baseball, soccer, cross-country, golf, softball, volleyball, and outdoor/indoor track and field. The Huskies have experienced success in many of their sports, over the years, among their most notable achievements being: 2007 NAIA Baseball World Series, 3rd place, 2007 Baseball Region VI Champions, participants in NAIA Men's Basketball Tournament ten straight seasons from 1997-2007, participants in the NCAA men's golf championships in 1984, 1987 (5th place), and 1988, and participants in the NCAA men's gymnastics championships in 1982 (10th place) and 1987 (7th place).

 

Did you know?

HBU’s first mascot Mingo, who was a live Husky. He is buried outside of Sharp Gymnasium. He lived from 1966-1982 and has a headstone commemorating his life in a courtyard in the front of the gym.
